The Greater Atlanta Ataxia Support Group held its annual picnic at Lake Lanier on June 15th. We had a wonderful gathering of approximately 30 individuals. The weather could not have had better. The support group provided grilled hot dogs and hamburgers. Members brought many delicious side dishes to share with the group. It was a great afternoon of just relaxing and socializing with each other.
The Greater Atlanta Ataxia Support Group met on August 3rd at the Emory Brain Health Center in Atlanta. We had 23 individuals in attendance. The meeting opened with welcomes and introductions by each member in attendance.
Next we had a lively discussion called Tips, Tricks, and Gadgets. The group shared ideas, brought examples, and submitted pictures of the things they use or have modified to make daily tasks easier. What works for one individual may not work for another and we presented with some interesting ideas. Some of the ideas were shower/bathroom rails, shower chairs, stair lifts, hoyer lifts, and eating utensils with large handles. A portable bidet for the toilet assists with clean up. Pool noodles can be used as guards for sharp edges around your house. One of the best innovative modifications was a rail installed on a car running from the luggage rack to the rear bumper. After loading a wheelchair in the rear of the vehicle this rail allowed the driver to hold and make their way to the driver’s seat.
We ended the meeting talking about plans for the Atlanta Walk N’ Roll to Cure Ataxia on Sept. 21st and International Ataxia Awareness Day on Sept. 25th. After the meeting refreshments were served and everyone enjoyed socializing.
